Frequently Asked Questions 〰️
1. How do I know if therapy is right for me?
Many people wonder if their concerns are “serious enough” for therapy. If something is affecting your mood, relationships, sleep, work, or overall sense of well-being, therapy may be helpful. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from support. Therapy can be a space to better understand yourself, build coping tools, and feel less alone with what you’re carrying.
2. What concerns do you help with?
At Windswept Wellness, therapy can support concerns such as anxiety, stress, low mood, life transitions, grief, burnout, relationship challenges, and feeling stuck or overwhelmed. You don’t need a diagnosis to come to therapy, many people come simply wanting support, clarity, or change.
3. What happens in the first therapy session?
The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you to therapy, your back-story, what helped shaped who you are now, what you’re hoping for, and any questions or concerns you may have. There’s no pressure to share everything right away. We’ll move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
4. What is therapy actually like?
Therapy is a collaborative conversation focused on understanding your experiences and finding ways to support your well-being. Sessions may include talking, reflection, practical strategies, and gentle exploration of patterns or emotions. Therapy is not about being judged or “fixed,” but about creating space for insight, growth, and relief.
5. Do I need a referral to start therapy?
No referral is needed to begin therapy. You can book an appointment directly. Some extended health insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement, so it’s helpful to check with your provider.
6. Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Therapy is confidential, and your privacy is taken seriously. Information shared in sessions is protected, with a few legal exceptions related to safety. These limits will be discussed clearly so you understand how confidentiality works in Ontario.
It is important to note that the Windswept Wellness office is located within a multidisciplinary health building @ Georgian Winds, 847 Vinden Street, Midland, which consists of family physician offices, Georgian Sports Medicine & Physiotherapy, along with other allied health professionals. While everything within the sessions is confidential, you may run into people you know in the common areas and waiting room. There’s no need to share why you’re here (though seeking mental health support is never something to be ashamed of).
Given our small community, we may run into each other while out and about, especially if you also have young kids in activities. No worries, I won’t approach you, however, you are more than welcome to initiate a hello with me :)
7. How long are sessions and how often will I attend?
Sessions are typically 50 minutes. Frequency varies depending on your needs and goals…some people attend weekly, others bi-weekly or occasionally. We’ll work together to find a rhythm that feels supportive and realistic for you.
8. How long does therapy last?
Therapy is such an individual process. Some people come for short-term support around a specific concern, while others choose longer-term therapy for deeper or ongoing work. We’ll regularly check in about how therapy is feeling and adjust as needed.
9. Do you offer virtual or in-person therapy?
Both. Windswept Wellness offers in-person sessions in Midland, Ontario, in an accessible location with plenty of parking, as well as secure virtual therapy for clients across Ontario We can talk about which option may be the best fit for you. A hybrid-model is also used in cases of inclement weather or illness. Note that for virtual support, you must be in Ontario during the appointment.
10. Is therapy covered by insurance?
Many extended health insurance plans cover therapy provided by a Registered Social Worker and / or Psychotherapist, which I am both. Coverage varies by plan. Receipts are provided after sessions for insurance reimbursement. It’s recommended that you confirm coverage details with your insurance provider before getting started.
11. What if I don’t know what to talk about?
That’s completely okay. Many people feel unsure about where to start. You don’t need to have the “right words.” We’ll work together to explore what feels most important in the moment.
There may be times where you feel like cancelling an appointment because you have nothing planned to talk about, often times, these turn out to be the best sessions as they become so authentic through vulnerability.
12. What if I’m not sure therapy will help, or I’m nervous to start?
Feeling uncertain or nervous is very common. Starting therapy is a big step. You’re welcome to ask questions, move slowly, and share feedback at any time. Therapy is a collaborative process, and your comfort and sense of safety matter so much. You’ll only know if it will help by being vulnerable and giving it a try.
Still have questions?
You’re welcome to reach out to ask questions or book an appointment. Taking the first step toward therapy can feel daunting. Support is available, and you don’t have to do this alone.
